On January 15, 2022, at Notre-Dame de Consolation in Paris, the XVIth Theological Congress of the review Courrier de Rome, in partnership with the DICI newsletter, was held and presided over by Fr. Davide Pagliarani, Superior General of the Society of St. Pius X.

The theme chosen this year was dictated by the most recent news: “How to Keep Tradition After Traditionis Custodes.”

More than 250 people – including many ecclesiastics, men and women religious, young professionals and students – attended the final conference, given by Fr. Pagliarani.

In the morning, work began after an introduction in which Fr. Bernard de Lacoste announced that the Courrier de Rome, henceforth under the responsibility of the director of the seminary of Ecône, would faithfully follow the doctrinal line traced by Fr. Emmanuel du Chalard.

Fr. Nicolas Portail, professor of Church history at the Saint-Pie X University Institute, drew up a historical picture of the situation of the traditional Mass since the Second Vatican Council.

Then Fr. Alain Lorans, editor-in-chief of DICI, and Fr. Jean-Michel Gleize, professor of ecclesiology at Ecône, responded to two objections contained in the text of the motu proprio Traditionis Custodes, respectively: “Does the Tridentine Mass call Vatican II into question?” and “Does the Tridentine Mass divide the Church: two masses, two ecclesiologies?”

In the afternoon, Professor Dominique Viain, associate professor of classics, showed “what Catholics are deprived of with Traditionis custodes,” followed by Fr. Benoît Espinasse, editor-in-chief of La Porte Latine, who focused on “the application of Traditionis custodes in the dioceses.”

And Fr. Davide Pagliarani explained how to “keep Tradition and pass it on.” The transcript of his talk can be read in the next issue of Nouvelles de Chrétienté.

At the end of this rich day of study, the participants – who showed keen interest, sustained by unfailing attention, throughout the six conferences – promised to return to the congress next year, asking organizers to break the usual two-year rhythm, so as not to make them wait until 2024.

The proceedings of this congress will be published in the coming months, the full text – and often enriched – of all the communications. Contact the Courrier de Rome, B.P. 10156, F-78001 Versailles Cedex – Email: [email protected] – Website: www.courrierderome.org
