On August 16 we celebrate the feast of St. Joachim, husband of St. Anne and father of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

His name means “preparation for the Savior,” a name predestined for the one who would be the father of she who would be chosen as the Mother of God. The liturgy celebrates the just man who gave many gifts to the poor and lived in the fear of the Lord as a faithful and prudent servant.

His wife, St. Anne, is celebrated on July 26.

Glorious in his descendents, the Church invites us to praise through him all the patriarchs and just men of the Old Testament who lived in anticipation of and in preparation for the coming of the Messiah.
