The resident priests and faithful in the SSPX chapels of South Africa pass along this report to FSSPX.News of the visit of the new Superior General:
After arriving late on the morning of Wednesday, September 26, 2018, the Superior General joined us in a very welcoming place, a spiritual retreat house in the Magaliesberg mountains, near Johannesburg. The week before, a retreat was preached for us there by Fr. Jacques Merel, who came from Bordeaux for the occasion; priests from all the priories and several brothers and oblates followed the retreat.
The second week was devoted to the priests’ session on two major themes: a presentation of the decisions taken by the recent General Chapter in Econe and a study on the crisis of the Church in Africa by Fr. Nicolas Bély from the Holy Cross priory in Nairobi, Kenya.
Fr. Davide Pagliarani gave us his view of the relations with Rome. Remaining in the light of the principles, without going into the different quarrels or giving into passion, he reminded us that the Church remains the Church even though she is occupied, that we are not schismatic, and that we must remain very prudent, always attentive to the signs Divine Providence gives us.
Between walks to observe the property’s giraffes and zebras, the Superior General met with all the priests. Meeting several of them for the first time, he used this opportunity to inquire about the specific conditions of the apostolate in Africa. The final meeting allowed the priests to ask all the questions they might have. Then it was time for the last meal, and for everyone to leave for the countries where they are stationed.
After the session, Fr. Pagliarani returned to the District House in Bredell to speak with the local superior about politics and the district’s specific problems. Both also went to see the lions in a safari, for it is always good to know how you’re going to be eaten… especially when you are the superior of the Society of St. Pius X!
The last day of this short visit came quickly. The Superior General celebrated Sunday Mass in our little chapel in Bredell, and the faithful were delighted to hear him preach in excellent English, enhanced, a course, by a charming Italian accent! He left on Sunday evening, for a night flight to Zürich, and from there to Menzingen. But he promised he would be back soon enough!
