Mgr Lazarus You Heung-sik

On June 11, 2021, Bishop Lazarus You Heung-sik, Bishop of Daejeon, Korea, age 69, was appointed Prefect of the Congregation for the Clergy. Cardinal Beniamino Stella (79) will remain in office until his successor assumes his new office, the Vatican says.

Cardinal Stella, who was the first dicastery prefect appointed by Pope Francis in 2013, will be 80 years old on August 18, having had his term extended for 5 years past the usual age of retirement.

Born in Nonsan, in the diocese of Daejeon, on November 17, 1951, Bishop You Heung-sik studied in Seoul and Rome, where he obtained a doctorate in dogmatic theology at the Pontifical Lateran University. Ordained a priest in 1979 in Daejeon, he carried out his entire priestly and episcopal ministry in the diocese of South Korea's 5th city.

Bishop Lazarus You Heung-sik was appointed coadjutor bishop of Daejon in 2003, then titular bishop in 2005.

Very invested in the issue of inter-Korean reconciliation, he has continued to advocate dialogue with North Korea, openly declaring his wish that North Korean President Kim Jong-un will “convert” and choose “a new way to build coexistence and especially reconciliation with the South.”

During a press conference at the Vatican in October 2018, during the Youth Synod, he expressed the desire that the Pope might one day visit North Korea.
