Abortion and excommunication

Cardinal Alfonso Lopez Trujillo, president of the Pontifical Council for the Family, answered questions from the Italian Catholic weekly Famiglia Cristiana, during an interview published in the July 2nd issue.

The cardinal declared: “We tend to impose new rights on man”. Indeed, he expounded: “That is what is happening for abortion which is a crime but which is becoming a right”. “Life is no longer sacred, nor untouchable, it has become something flexible in man’s hands”. Now, “in the case of abortion, excommunication applies to the mother, the doctors, the nurses and the father if he gives his agreement”. “The same applies” to research on embryo stem cells, for “to destroy an embryo is tantamount to performing an abortion”. And excommunication also applies to “researchers who eliminate embryos”.

“The Church is aware of the progress of science but also of its limitations, and the Church defends life, period”, stated the president of the Pontifical Council for the Family. “Even if we prove the success of therapies based on embryo stem cells, we may never suppress one life in order to cure another”, he added. “The frenzy of man’s omnipotence would then be total to the great damage of our life in common”.

Cardinal Alfonso Trujillo emphasized that “certain laws nowadays punish the defense of life and of the family as if it were some kind of crime against the State, a form of disobedience to the government or of discrimination against women”. It might look like “the Church runs the risk of being brought before some international Court of justice if the debate becomes more tense”.
