The Child Jesus distributing bread to pilgrims – Murillo (1678)

Who could doubt that it took nothing less than a very great cause for such a great Majesty to deign to descend from so far into a place so unworthy of Him?

Indeed, the motive which determined it is quite great, because it is nothing less than His  great mercy, His great compassion, and His immense charity.

Indeed, for what end must we believe that He came? This is the question which we now have to clarify, however the search will not demand much labor, since His words and actions shout out loud to us the reason for His coming. For it was to seek the hundredth sheep that was lost and wandering that He came down in haste from the heavenly mountains; it is for us that He has come, “Let the mercies of the Lord give glory to him: and his wonderful works to the children of men” (Ps. 106:8). How great is the honor of the God who comes to seek us!
