Some Hindu extremist groups tried to force their way into St. Mary’s PG College in Vidisha, a Catholic institution in the diocese of Sagar, in the Indian State of Madhya Pradesh, in central India.

Their intention was to perform Hindu rituals on the college premises.

On January 4, 2018, over 900 students affiliated with the Hindu group Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad gathered in front of the college. They threatened to force their way in to celebrate the Aarti di Bharat Mata ceremony, during which the national personification of India is incensed as “Goddess Mother”. They also intended to perform other rites in honor of different Hindu divinities.

The police intervened – for once – and broke up the crowd. “Calm has returned to the place now,” Bishop Theodore Mascarenhas, secretary general for the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India, declared to Fides, but “policemen on watch have remained in the area.”

The prelate added that the violence of the intrusion left “the Fathers and Sisters and other personnel…in a state of shock.”
