The Apostolic Exhortation Pastores Gregis, signed by the Holy Father on October 16 2003, follows the bishops synod of September 2001. This document is composed of seven chapters. The first, Mystery and ministry of the bishop, defines the foundations of the episcopal mission. The second, The spiritual life of the bishop, passes in review the means of sanctification, from prayer to chastity, going through the virtue of obedience and the spirit of poverty. The third, Master of the Faith and herald of the Word, indicates his apostolate. The fourth, Minister of Grace of the supreme ministry, a tract on his responsibility in matters liturgical and spiritual. The fifth, The pastoral government of the bishop, stresses particularly the formation of future priests and the role of the family. The sixth chapter, In the communion of the Churches, concerns collegiality, episcopal conferences, relations with the curia and the particular function of the Eastern churches. Finally the last and seventh chapter, The bishop faced with the challenges of today, describes the scope and limits of his actions.
