Archbishop Gänswein Communicates About Benedict XVI’s Health

While rumors about the poor health of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI circulate on the internet, his private secretary denies it, and gives details of the life that Josef Ratzinger leads in the Vatican.
“There have been false rumors about his health.” Archbishop Georg Gänswein, private secretary of the former sovereign pontiff, wishes to make things clear, in the interview he gave to the Italian weekly Oggi, on November 4, 2020, on the occasion of the release of the Italian edition of Peter Seewald’s book, Benedict XVI, A Life.
“Benedict XVI is like a man of 93 years,” continues the German prelate, “He is fragile in his body, his voice is very weak, but his mind is clear. Every day, he concelebrates mass, prays, receives a few more visits, reads, studies, listens to music, takes care of his correspondence.”
Mgr. Gänswein was trying to cut off the gossip that has appeared on social networks. A chain of calls for prayer has indeed circulated, spreading false rumors of the imminent end of the Pope Emeritus, according to comments attributed to his private secretary: “fake news,” he said.
The Pope Emeritus “has recovered from the fatigue of the trip to Germany, to Regensburg, where he went last June to visit his brother Georg, who later died, as well as from shingles which caused him great pain.”
The former German pontiff resides in the former Mater Ecclesiae monastery on Vatican Hill, where he has retired since his renunciation announced on February 11, 2013.
However, it would be interesting to know what the former prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith thinks about the serious controversy launched by his successor regarding the civil union pact for homosexuals. He who had prepared a firm text to condemn any attempt to introduce such a pact.
