The “technical” preparations for the classification of the archives concerning the pontificate of Pius XII should be completed by 2014 or 2015

This, declared Msgr. Sergio Pagano, Prefect of the Vatican Secret Archives, on January 29.

When questioned by the Italian newspaper Il Messagero, the prelate explained that the archives of the World War II pope have not yet been opened for “technical” and not political reasons.

The Holy See has a great interest in opening these documents from Pius XII's pontificate, which was indeed crucial under more than one aspect, but from which we have nothing to fear,

insisted Msgr. Pagano, who hopes, in this effort to understand “Pius XII's presumed silences in the face of the Holocaust”, to welcome “serious historians” and not just “so-called researchers”.

The Roman prelate fears that the latter would be looking for “a scoop” than for “historiographic meditation”.
