Are Relations between the Church and Vietnam Growing More Peaceful?

Mgr Antonio Camilleri and Nguyễn Xuân Phúc.
Relations between Vietnam and the Vatican seem to be improving: Monsignor Antoine Camilleri, undersecretary for Relations with States, just paid a visit to Hanoi from January 16 to 20, 2018.
During his visit, Mgr. Camilleri met with the Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyễn Xuân Phúc and the head of the Government Committee for Religious Affairs, Vũ Chiến Thắng.
The Pope’s envoy presented the Prime Minister with Pope Francis’s greetings and expressed the Sovereign Pontiff’s solicitude for the country: “I confirm that the Holy Father has a special interest for Vietnam. Pope Francis also wants the Church of Vietnam to always accompany and contribute to the prosperity of the nation,” he declared.
The Prime Minister pointed out the contribution of Catholics to the positive situation in the country.
The visit from the representative of the Holy See came a few months after the implementation of the new law “on belief and religion” that makes the bishops fear further restrictions on the freedom of the Church in Vietnam.
