Asia Bibi Definitely Free
The lawyer of the Christian acquitted of blasphemy announced that her client has left Pakistan for Canada, her new adopted country.
Asia Bibi’s fate remained uncertain until a few days ago: more than six months after being finally acquitted of a death sentence for “blasphemy” against Islam, there were still many in Pakistan demanding the death of the mother of a Catholic family. “I questioned available channels, and according to them, she has left for Canada,” where her daughters took refuge several months ago, confirmed her lawyer Saif Ul-Malook on May 8, 2019.
Wilson Chowdhry, of the British Pakistani Christian Association, told the Associated Press that he had received a text message from a British diplomat in which he wrote: “Asia is out.”
If this episode constitutes a happy epilogue of a nine-year ordeal suffered by Asia Bibi and her family, many Christians are still imprisoned in Pakistan, in the name of a “blasphemy law,” often used to settle personal conflicts, by spreading false accusations
