An Auction at the Vatican to Support Christians in Iraq
Pope Francis gave the 750,000€ ($872,000) from the auction of the Lamborghini he was given to the Christians in Iraq.
The Chaldean Catholic Patriarch of Babylon, Raphaël Louis I Sako, hailed this donation that will enable many Christians to turn to the Nineveh Plains.
In November 2017, Lamborghini gave the Holy Father a white and golden yellow Huracán with a top speed of 198mph, and he blessed the car.
Estimated at 250,000 to 350,000€ by the auction house, the sports car was auctioned off on May 12, 2018, for 750,000€.
Patriarch Sako responded to the sovereign pontiff’s donation on May 15, 2018, declaring:
This gift infuses so much hope in us and constitutes a great encouragement! It’s important for us to remain, to continue our life in Iraq, and to witness our faith here and the values of the Gospel.
Aide à l’Eglise en détresse (AED) has been financing emergency humanitarian initiatives in Iraq since June 2014, providing 38 million euros so far.
