On January 3, the Pontifical Council for the Laity officially announced the next World Youth Day, whose theme has been chosen by Benedict XVI . The 23rd World Youth Day will take place in Sydney from July 15 to 20, on the theme of the Holy Spirit: “It is possible to begin now the pastoral preparation for the next WYD, on the passage taken from the book of the Acts of the Apostles in the Bible, in chapter 1, verse 8, ‘You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you, and then you will be my witnesses.’”

In the meantime, the 21st and 22nd World Youth Day will be celebrated in the dioceses on Palm Sunday on the themes, in 2006: “Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light to my path,” and in 2007: “Love one another, as I have loved you.”

The WYD was founded on December 20, 1985 by John Paul II, when he announced that the young people would meet every year for the feast of Palm Sunday, and every two years for an international meeting with the Pope. The first international WYD took place at Buenos Aires in Argentina, in 1987.
