The Bambino Gesu Hospital Founds a Clinic in Bangui
Cardinal Konrad Krajewski, Papal Almoner of the Holy See, and Mariella Enoc, president of the Bambino Gesu Children's Hospital, inaugurated a new children’s health facility in Bangui (Central African Republic) on March 2, 2019.
This project materialized with the collaboration of the famous Bambino Gesu Hospital in Rome. It was completed after Pope Francis’ visit to the country at the end of November 2015.
To finance the new hospital, the Office of Papal Charities disbursed three million euros. The Vatican Gendarmerie collected 750,000 euros, and the Italian parish of San-Martino-de-Novare made a donation of one million euros, the amount of a legacy it had received.
With this funding, Bambino Gesu made several urgent contributions, acquiring and installing an electrical generator for example. The construction continued until 2019 to provide the Central African capital—one of the poorest in the world—with a proper children's hospital.
In addition to material and financial assistance, the Bambino Gesu has also promised to assemble and form a group of doctors on site, as well as to provide them with remote assistance.
Bambino Gesu is the most important pediatric healthcare facility in Europe. Founded in 1869 thanks to the generosity of the Salviati family and bequeathed to the Holy See in 1924, the hospital has taken on an international importance over the years. In 2019, it counts some 3,300 health professionals, who conducted 1.9 million interventions last year.
To pay tribute to the 150th anniversary of the establishment's foundation, the Holy See has decided to issue a series of stamps commemorating the event.
