Ibtihaj Muhammad presents the first Barbie doll with Islamic veil.

The American toy maker Mattel presented its latest Barbie doll model on November 13, 2017: dressed as a fencer, she wears an Islamic veil.

In order to make its new toy more “politically correct”, Mattel decided to create its new Barbie in honor of the fencer Ibtihaj Muhammad, who in 2016 was the first American athlete to participate in the Olympic Games wearing a veil. The new doll should be for sale in 2018, the toy-maker’s spokesman told AFP.

While many protests were made on social media, the athlete thanked Mattel on Twitter for welcoming her as a new member of the Barbie family. “I'm proud to know that little girls everywhere can now play with a Barbie who chooses to wear hijab! This is a childhood dream come true”.

Mattel was for a long time the biggest producer of American toys, but its market capitalization is now half the size of its rival Hasbro’s, after a steady decline in its stock value due to poor results. Will Barbie’s new veil after 60 years on the market turn things around for Mattel? We wager not.
