Benedict XVI appoints new bishop of Assisi …

On November 19, Benedict XVI named Mgr. Domenico Sorrentino bishop of Assisi Nocera Umbra-Gualdo Tadino, in Umbria. The former secretary of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments retains his title of archbishop and succeeds Mgr. Sergio Goretti.

In well informed Roman circles, it is said that Mgr. Sorrentino accepted this nomination with very little enthusiasm, attached as he was to his role at the Congregation for Divine Worship. It does seem that it was he who wrote the secret note which Cardinal Arinze had addressed to the pope, which stated that it would be impossible to free the Mass of St. Pius V because it had been abolished. The existence of this note had been revealed by the Vatican expert Andrea Tornielli of the Italian daily Il Giornale, on October 22. (see DICI n° 123 of October 20, 2005)
