The 1.5 million euros collected on average every year from the Trevi Fountain will indeed be handed over to the Catholic association Caritas, even though the city of Rome announced its intention of helping itself to this sum on December 28, 2018.

Has the “Fountain of Love” caused a falling out between Rome and the Vatican? So it seemed when, after a discreet and innocent town council meeting on December 28, 2018, the mayor of Rome, Virginia Raggi – a member of “Five Stars”, an anti-elite social movement – decided not to hand the sum collected from the Trevi Fountain over to Caritas, a Catholic association whose purpose is to help the destitute.

On January 14, 2019, upon second thought – and encouraged by the outcry in the media – Virginia Raggi confirmed to L’Osservatore Romano that the entire sum collected in the fountain will indeed be handed over to Caritas, along with the 200,000€ collected from other Roman fountains.

“No one ever thought of depriving Caritas of these funds. This association accomplishes an important task on the diocesan level, helping many needy persons, and this is also important for the city of Rome that wishes to remain the capital of welcome for the weakest,” reassured Virginia Raggi in the columns of the Roman newspaper.
