Spain: Renewal of consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary

On Sunday May 22, the Spanish bishops renewed the consecration of their country to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. The consecration took place in front of the Basilica of Our Lady of Pilar in Saragossa, in the presence of 120,000 faithful. Almost all of the Spanish bishops were present, together with the papal nuncio, Mgr. Manuel Monteiro de Castro, who brought a message from Pope Benedict XVI.

This ceremony was a part of the celebration of the 150th anniversary of the proclamation of the dogma of the Immaculate Conception – La Virgen del Pilar of Saragossa is the Patron Saint of Spain.

 India: Violent anti-Christian campaign

A new and virulent campaign has been launched in India by fundamentalist Hindu movements. In the state of Orissa, the “World Hindu Council” is demanding the immediate dismissal of all Christians employed in administration, the police force and all civil offices. This campaign is using advertising, demonstrations and media intervention. The spokesman for the Bishop’s Conference, Fr. Babu, told the Agency Fides: “we are very worried that this kind of protest may become established. It is contrary to the constitution of India, to fundamental human rights and to the pluralist spirit of the Indian nation. We are asking these groups to retract their demands, and we are studying the possibility of writing an official letter to the civil authorities of the State of Orissa and to the Prime Minister of the Indian Union.”

In Orissa, a law on religious liberty demands the official authorization of a magistrate for all conversions. This Indian State pays no heed to all interreligious dialogue advocated by Catholic theologians in India.
