The Maronite Catholic Patriarch of Antioch, Cardinal Bechara Boutros Rai, reproaches the international community with “seeking their own interests,” and not offering “any signs of a sincere search for peace” in the Middle East

The head of the Maronite Catholic Church spoke on the Italian Episcopal Conference’s channel Tv2000 on November 27, 2017. He berated the attitude of the international community: “If the international community wants peace,” he declared, “then it has to work for a compromise. If it does not want peace, if it wants wars and conflicts to continue to inflame the Middle East, then I am sorry to say that this region is doomed never to experience peace.”

For Cardinal Rai, it is quite simple: “the problem between Israel and the Arab world needs to be resolved. There needs to be a show of good will.”

The cardinal pointed out the political, economic, and demographical difficulties currently afflicting his country, Lebanon: “Lebanon’s problem,” he explained, “is the weight it is carrying today: the presence of 1,700,000 refugees, plus half a million Palestinians….What country is powerful enough to welcome more than half the number of its own people?”

The prelate believes that the conflicts that are dragging on in Syria and Iraq with the participation of the international community have no sense, other than “destroying, making victims, and creating floods of migration.”
