The Catholic Church in Cuba
With a surface area of 110,861 km2, Cuba has 11,242,000 inhabitants, of whom 6,766,000 are Catholic (60.19%). The Church has 11 dioceses and other ecclesiastical districts consisting of 304 parishes and 2,210 pastoral centers, with a personnel count of 17 bishops, 361 priests, 78 seminarians and 13 postulants, 656 religious, 24 consecrated lay people, 2,112 lay missionaries and 4,133 catechists. The Catholic education system has 12 schools for 1,113 students, 10 other specialized centers and 17 service centers, 2 clinics, a leprosarium, 8 retreat houses, 3 orphanages and nurseries, and 3 other specialized social centers.
Between the 1959 Revolution and today, the numbers of priests and religious have diminished by half. One Cuban in 10 self-identifies as Catholic and about 2% of the population actually practices the faith. Due to the reduced numbers of the faithful, the Church in Cuba relies heavily on foreign aid, which in large part comes from the United States, the Pontifical Missionary Works, or German charity associations.
