The Cause of Assisted Suicide Strengthened by an Old Man’s Programmed Death
David Goodall
After the assisted suicide of the botanist and ecologist David Goodall on May 10, 2018, pro-life organizations lament a “political move” that will have incalculable consequences on the lives of the most vulnerable.
At the age of 104 and in perfect health, David Goodall, a renowned professor in the Anglo-Saxon world, left his country, Australia, to end his days in Bern, Switzerland, where the practice of assisted suicide is authorized.
“If someone acts as he does, for people to call it a personal act is a lie; it was a political act,” declared Stephen Drake, a research analyst and member of the committee Not Dead Yet, that opposes the legalization of assisted suicide and euthanasia.
The scientist added that the Goodall affair will be a “wedge issue” for “assisted suicide advocates”. “Once you open the door, then the campaign becomes to kick it open as far as you can.”
“We know that legalizing assisted suicide only places the vulnerable at greater risk. Mr. Goodall himself had no terminal illness and yet was given lethal medication,” explained Matt Valliere, director of Patients Rights Action Fund, another pro-life organization.
Behind the legalization of assisted suicide, there is also a despicable economic calculation, revealed Stephen Drake, basing his claim on a famous American promoter of euthanasia, Derek Humphrey, founder of the Hemlock Society. Humphrey wrote:
...as technology advances, as medical costs skyrocket out of control, (…) the impetus of cost containment provide impetus, whether openly acknowledged or not, for the practicalities of an assisted death.
In fact, as the average lifespan continues to grow longer, the fight for euthanasia and the right to die with dignity (sic) serves the purposes of inverse Malthusian politics. These politics limited births with birth control and abortion, and now they are applying the same goal to those nearing the end of their lives.
This breakneck race says much about our societies that no longer have any reference point or morals. It eliminates Christian death and the example Christ left for all men on the Cross. It turns death into a personal choice, pretending to replace God, Who nonetheless remains the true Master of life and death.
