The Argentinian Cardinal Jorge Maria Mejia, librarian and archivist of the Holy See, passed the age of 80 years on 31st January 2003. At present, the college of electing cardinals – which should elect a new Pope in the event of See of Peter becoming vacant – counts no more than 112 members, the Kenyan Cardinal Maurice Michael Otunga, born in January 1923, also no longer being able to elect in the event of a conclave.
