According to Vatican observer Andrea Tornielli, of the Italian daily Il Giornale, in the coming weeks the Vatican might announce the creation of a new dicastery devoted to the evangelization of the West, which would be presided by Msgr. Rino Fisichella, currently president of the Pontifical Academy for Life and rector of the Lateran University.

Posting the news on the Internet on April 25, 2010, he stated that Benedict XVI would be in the process of preparing an apostolic letter on the institution of the Pontifical Council for the New Evangelization. The new dicastery would be devoted to the missions in countries where the Gospel was announced centuries ago but where its action in the lives of the people seems to have faded; it would involve Europe, the United States of America, and South America.
