Diocese of Chur (Switzerland): Bishop Huonder Replaced by an Administrator
On April 21, 2017, upon reaching the age limit, Bishop Vitus Huonder submitted his resignation to Pope Francis, who then kept him in place for two additional years. On April 21, 2019, he was to be appointed administrator of the diocese to prepare for the election of his successor (a process particular to the diocese of Chur), but he was finally kept in his seat.
Today, May 20, 2019, Pope Francis relieved Bishop Huonder of his office to replace him with Bishop Peter Bürcher, appointed administrator. It seems that this change of attitude, somewhat unexpected, is related to a certain nervousness of minds in the diocese and the tension that followed the announcement of retaining the prelate a month ago.
Bishop Huonder is now free from any obligation or mission, and can thus realize an already old aspiration: “to retire in a life of prayer, to celebrate the traditional Mass exclusively, and to promote Tradition as the only way to renew the life of the Church.” For that reason, he wants to join a house of the Society of Saint Pius X, where he will find the spiritual environment conducive to the realization of his wish.
