Egypt: The victory of the Islamist parties worries the Copts

Coptic Christians in Egypt have expressed anxiety about the rise to power of Islamic fundamentalists who obtained two-thirds of the votes in the elections on November 28 last. Specifically, the three fundamentalist parties together won 65.5% of the votes. They are: the Freedom and Justice Party (PLJ), created by the Muslim Brotherhood (36.62%, or 3.5 million votes); the Salafist Al-Nour Party (24.36%, or 2.3 million votes); and the Wassat Party of “moderate Islamists” (4.27% or about 416,000 votes).
According to the Catholic Information Service for Africa (CISA), many Copts fear that the presence of an Islamist regime, the majority after the parliamentary and presidential elections, might result in greater repression and more discrimination against them. About 100,000 Copts have migrated abroad since the fall of Hosni Mubarak last February. (Source: APICS - DICI No. 247 of 12/23/11)
