In a ruling issued on October 18th, the European Court of Justice has banned the patenting of scientific research techniques on human embryos. Such techniques can lead to the destruction of the embryo.
The European Court, submitted by Germany, moreover gave a very broad definition to the concept of the human embryo - a non-fertilized human egg can now be considered as such - in order to protect it from possible commercialization. However, in its October 19 edition, the Vatican newspaper, L'Osservatore Romano expressed reservations about the longevity of the decision of the European Court of Justice.
