Is Euthanasia Soon to Become Legal in Spain?
The Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE) has presented the Congress of Deputies with a bill to decriminalize euthanasia in public and private hospitals, including it in Social Security coverage.
On May 3, 2018, the PSOE used the typical wording, in the name of “the right to a dignified death” and in the interest of “ending suffering”, to defend the legalization of euthanasia before the Congress of Deputies.
According to the Socialists, “the State cannot turn its back on people who wish to put an end to the sufferings caused by their illness or handicap.” Eight out of ten Spaniards are in favor of this law, claims the PSOE.
The bill would make it possible to open a “euthanasia procedure” “at the request of the person, if he considers his suffering intolerable and the consequence of a serious, incurable and irreversible illness.”
This procedure would involve a legal waiting period of 32 days, after which the lethal medication would be prescribed. It would then be administered and there would be strict surveillance until the patient’s death.
At this stage, the PSOE is willing to accept, at least for the time being, and in the interest of not frightening health professionals, a right to conscientious objection for doctors and nurses.
The Christian attitude
Our perspective towards death is far different. Pope St. Pius X expressed it perfectly in his prayer for a good death:
“O Jesus, while I adore Your dying breath, I beg You to receive mine. Since I do not know whether I shall have command of my senses when I depart from this world, I offer You even now my last agony and all the sorrows of my passing. I give my soul into Your hands for You are my Father and my Savior. Grant that the last beat of my heart may be an act of perfect love for You.
O Lord, my God, from this moment on I accept with a good will, as something coming from your hand, whatever kind of death you want to send me, with all its anguish, pain, and sorrow. Amen.”
