Out of a total of 485 cemeteries and places of worship vandalized between January 1 and September 30, 2010, 410 or 95% of the damaged sites were Christian.  This statistic from the Ministry of the Interior follows up a question from the Commissioner for Human Rights of the Council of Europe, Thomas Hammarberg, who had stated that he was “deeply troubled” by the recent profanation of 37 graves in two Muslim sectors of cemeteries in Strasbourg which occurred after vandalism to other Muslim and Jewish burial places throughout Alsace.

The Muslim sites profaned were 34 mosques or prayer halls and 6 Muslim sectors in cemeteries.  The Jewish sites targeted included 26 places of worship and 9 cemeteries.  The Christian sites numbered 231 places of worship and 179 cemeteries.  In his response to the letter on this subject that the high-ranking European official sent him on October 8, the Minister of the Interior, Brice Hortefeux mentions only an “unfailing determination to fight against these particularly hateful acts of racism and anti-Semitism”.  (Sources : Le Figaro/AFP – DICI no. 227 dated December 18, 2010)
