The foundation stone of the Great Mosque of Strasbourg was symbolically laid on October 29, during the month of Ramadan, in the presence of different religious representatives, including the archbishop of Strasbourg, Mgr. Joseph Doré, Fabienne Keller, UMP mayor of the city, and Robert Grossman, UMP president of the City Community of Strasbourg (CUS).

The building is situated on land leased by the city council. It will have a 20 meter high dome, a prayer room with a surface area of 1,000 square meters and a 250 square meter mezzanine for women, as well as offices, making a total surface area of 2,000 square meters. Its has a budget of 6 million euros, 10% of which will be financed by the municipality.

A previous plan, approved by the former socialist council, was also scheduled for the eventual construction of a second mosque. However, it was suspended in 2001 with the arrival of a new governing party.
