According to the organiser of papal visits, Mgr. Renato Boccardo, John Paul II will visit Cologne next August for the World Youth Day (WYD), health permitting. Cologne will host WYD from August 16 to 21. Around 800,000 young people are expected. John Paul II will arrive on August 18, take part in the vigil of 20th, and preside over the final Mass on the morning of 21st. The cost of these days is estimated at 84 million euros.

“We are talking of the possibility of other voyages which would be undertaken in the same way as those of the last two years, as regards time and schedules, with a maximum of one or two stages,” said Mgr. Boccardo. “For the moment I wouldn’t exclude them”, but it is clear that nothing can be announced at the moment. However, Ireland and Poland have been mentioned.

“John Paul II carries out his pastoral visits as a duty,”, said the Italian bishop. “Even now that he can no longer count on his once well known physical energy, when moving around is proving, every day, to be more difficult for him, it has to be said that the pope remains firm in his intention to continue his pilgrim mission, even in far away countries, particularly where doors have not yet been opened to him”. Up to now, the Sovereign Pontiff has made 104 trips abroad, visiting 129 countries, not counting the occupied Palestinian Territories, but he has never been able to go to certain countries, such as China, Vietnam or Russia.
