German Faithful File a Complaint against Their Bishop with the Holy See
Bishop Gregor Maria Hanke, accused of embezzlement
After embezzlements that caused the German diocese of Eichstätt in Bavaria to lose about 60 million euros, a group of Catholics has decided to file a complaint with the Holy See against their bishop, Bishop Gregor Maria Hanke.
The letter, dated March 18, 2018, was addressed to Cardinal Benjamin Stella, prefect of the Congregation for the Clergy, and to the Apostolic Nuncio in Berlin.
The faithful reproach their bishop with failing in his “duty of vigilance” by nominating “an incompetent director of finances who got tangled up in controversial real estate loans” in the United States.
According to the German press agency KNA, Bishop Hanke said he is “pleased to know exactly what reproaches are being made against him”, as they had up until now been nothing but “anonymous rumors and accusations”.
KNA also recalls that the German justice is involved, and an investigation is underway.
