The online edition of Die Stimme, the daily newspaper of the city of Heilbronn (Baden-Württemberg), announced on December 9 the name of the new lawyer chosen by Bishop Richard Williamson to defend him during his appeal to the higher court in Regensburg (see DICI no. 226) LINK.  The advocate in question is Norbert Wingerter, Esq., a criminal lawyer.

The 72-year-old Wingerter told the reporter from Die Stimme that he had agreed to defend the British bishop, because it is for him an obligation of professional conscience.  “Every accused party has the right to a lawyer whom he trusts.”  He has not yet reviewed the legal brief, but he thinks that the trial should take place next March.  In his view, the line of defense could involve determining whether Bishop Williamson had foreseen that his remarks, recorded by a Swedish television network, would be broadcast in Germany where they are liable to prosecution, which is not the case in Sweden.  (Source : stimme.de – DICI no. 227 dated December 18, 2010)
