Germany: Conversions to Islam

On December 13, the Central Institute of Islamic Archives in Germany, located in Soest, published figures of a poll concerning Muslims in Germany. 14,352 of the 3.2 million Muslims living in Germany are of German origin and more than a thousand Germans converted to Islam in 2005, a record number.

Among the converts, almost two thirds (62%) are women. “For us it’s a considerable increase”, declared Salim Abdullah, director of the Institute, in the daily Berliner Zeitung. “Most have a degree from an institute of higher education and a good income” and only a small number of them converted due to marrying a Muslim, he added. The strong increase of conversions to Islam is difficult to explain because the new believers rarely give the reason for their conversion.
