Germany : Education for the True, the Good, and the Beautiful in life
Interview with Sr. Maria Michaela Metz (FSSPX), Headmaster of the Accredited Private Grammar Boarding School for Girls in Schönenberg (Germany, nearly Köln/Bonn), for more than 25 years.
Interviewer: Sr. Michaela, how would you describe your boarding school in just a few words?
Sr. Maria Michaela: St Theresien Gynasium is not simply a school, but a place of security, friendship and a safe haven for healthy development. Above all it is a place where every individual is guaranteed the support they need. Our boarding school works to develop many different skills and we try to impart to our girls the joy of studying, as well as persistence and perseverance. Our students are encouraged to discover and develop their own personal talents. Our school is also open to external students who do not live on campus.
Interviewer: What possibilities for a universal education do you offer apart from the classes?
Sr. Maria Michaela: As well as the obligatory classes, we also place great value in the non academic pursuits and group activities of our girls. There are extensive opportunities for leisure; musical instruments, singing, acting, sports, and also an outdoor hut and fire pit for our girl scouts.
The student body regularly attend Mass and group prayers are said before classes. Spiritual direction is always available (which our students may wish to take advantage of) and added to this we provide religious instruction to prepare the spirit of our young students for a life according to Christian principles. The ability to distinguish good from evil is a great gift and will lead our students towards a prosperous future, which is our school's objective. We are Catholic school, but we also accept students of other denominations.
Interviewer: What kind of importance does the love for music and art in particular have for you?
Sr. Maria Michaela: Music and art are subjects that especially speak to the perceptive senses. They affect the whole person, the spirit, feelings and character and they can help elevate, and encourage you to pursue things of the mind. Thus music and art hold high importance at St Theresien Gymnasium. Students develop a sense of beauty, which is the expression of the true and good, as well as forming their own perceptive faculties.
Interviewer: How are the students led towards self-sufficiency and responsibility for their own actions?
Sr. Maria Michaela: In our fast changing world, we want to give the children and teenagers in our care the help they need to successfully face the challenges of modern times.
Education is not simply the passing on of knowledge, it is also raising children to think and judge on their own. We want to lay the foundation for the true formation of character. Thus, we will enable our students to become joyful and capable young women who trust in God. The special atmosphere of our school is reflected in its good performance. Our graduates constantly reach above average results.
