Germany: The SSPX Brings an Action against a Professor

The German District of the SSPX made known in a press release of 30 April that it had lodged a complaint against Professor Eberhard Schockenhoff of the Theology Faculty of the University Albert-Ludwig in Fribourg-en-Brisgau. In a program on the television network SWR, broadcast on 19 April, the professor called the Society the “extremist dregs of the right,” seeing in them “an ideological amalgam of fascism and of positions once maintained by the National Socialists.” The German District deems that these words should be pursued at law because they defame an entire group of traditional Catholics and gravely harm their reputation. In the same communiqué they also point out that Professor Schockenhoff runs the risk of placing himself outside the Catholic Church by proclaiming in the daily Frankfurter Rundschau of 26 April that homosexual unions are “ethically of great value.” For the opinion expressed in the newspaper alone, “Eberhard Schockenhoff’s canonical mission [to teach at a Catholic university] should be withdrawn by the Church because it contradicts Church doctrine,” declared the SSPX in Germany.
