Vladimir Putin and Patriarch Kirill on September 19, 2018

On September 19, 2018, in the presence of the chief of State, Vladimir Putin, the head of the autocephalous Russian Church blessed the first stone of the Resurrection Cathedral.

The future sanctuary will be over 300 feet high and will be dedicated to the Russian Armed Forces. It will be located about 30 miles from Moscow, in the heart of the Patriotic Park that is reserved for the organization of military events or exhibitions related to the army. Russian President Vladimir Putin stated:

It will be the main church of our Armed Forces, one more symbol of our invincible national tradition, our fidelity to the memory of our ancestors and their deeds for the benefit of homeland,

The construction of this cathedral marks the increasingly close bond between the army and the Church in Russia: in 2010, the Patriarch of Moscow nominated 400 military chaplains to the Russian Armed Forces and created centers where they receive a three-month-long formation.

Since 2013, they have also been forming paratrooper chaplains. The goal?  To drop “church kits” from the sky so that the most isolated sections can have a place of worship. A far cry from the nightmare of “French-style secularism” …
