Holy Land: A Warning from the Latin Patriarchate

In a press release co-signed with the main components of Christianity in the Holy Land, the apostolic administrator of the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem, Archbishop Pierbattista Pizzaballa, warns against the plan to annex part of the West Bank by the Jewish state.
On May 7, 2020, the Supreme Court of Israel validated the government agreement between Benjamin Netanyahu and his rival Benny Gantz, according to which whole swathes of the West Bank occupied by the Israeli army are supposed purely and simply to be annexed by the Jewish state.
On the same day, Archbishop Pizzaballa, in his capacity as apostolic administrator of the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem, signed a joint declaration with the different Christian denominations present in the Holy Land.
The Franciscan prelate announced there viewing “these plans for annexation with the greatest concern, and calls on the State of Israel to refrain from such unilateral actions which would entail the loss of all hope of success in the peace process.”
The contested plan is none other than that devised by Jared Kushner, the son-in-law and senior adviser to American President Donald Trump. It provides for the annexation by Israel of the Jordan Valley and the Jewish settlements in the West Bank, a region partly occupied since 1967 by the Hebrew state. Israel would thus see its eastern border extend to Jordan, which the Palestinians refuse.
Archbishop Pizzaballa has invited Russia and Europe to find an alternative peace solution to this project firmly defended by the American president, an unwavering supporter of Benjamin Netanyahu and his policies.
