Ecumenical grey

On February 19, in Barcelona, Cardinal Walter Kasper, president of the Pontifical Council for the Promotion of Christian Unity, said that: “one of the worst evils in the Church is the division among Christians,” related Zenith Agency in a communiqué dated February 21.

The German prelate declared that: “there is awareness that the division of Christians is a world scandal” and “even though the theological differences are evident,” we have “great points in common, such a baptism.” He then added that ecumenism is “a process to unite the Church” and means “a rapprochement of the Churches which are separated but united in the sense that they are all Christians.” He then specified that: “the debate is not between types of Christians but between believers and nonbelievers.”

The President of the Pontifical Council for the Promotion of Christian Unity stressed that: “ecumenism is the true heart of the Church.” According to him, ecumenism is “the true path of the Church of the future;” it is a matter of “reaching a Christian tone common to the Churches through a long-term process over many years.”

No doubt, Cardinal Kasper is the unchallenged specialist in reconciling what cannot be reconciled, namely an oxymoron in the language of rhetoricians. After the differentiated consensus or the consensual difference… - between Catholics and Protestants, the President of the Pontifical Council for the Promotion of Christian Unity now proposes the “separated” yet “united” “brethren”, that is to say the united separation or the separated union. But since, in his opinion it is a process under completion, it would be still better to speak of unifying separation, or even of separating union.

His radical incapacity to make a choice between black and white earned Cardinal Kasper the nickname of “grey Eminence” from some in Rome…. And it is also said that ecumenical dialogue is of the same color!
