Il Perugino Returns to His City
From October 11, 2019 to January 26, 2020, the city of Perugia will welcome to the very place for which it was conceived, a major work of Perugino, an Italian Renaissance painter and Raphael’s teacher.
The Decemviri Altarpiece was made by Pietro Vanucci, called Il Perugino, between 1495 and 1496, on the request of the Perugia elders. Originally, this work consisted of two elements: the cymatium, or upper portion, which depicts Christ in the tomb, now on display at the Galleria Nazionale dell 'Umbria in Perugia, and the painting preserved in the Vatican.
The latter depicts the Virgin sitting under a portico on a monumental throne with the Child Jesus on her knees and, on one side, St. Laurent and St. Louis of Toulouse, and on the other side St. Herculaneum and St. Constant, protectors of the Umbrian city.
The exhibition which is being held in Perugia until January 26, 2020 was organized with the collaboration of the Vatican Museums. It is called “the Return of Pietro Perugino to the Decemvirs Palace.” Its purpose is to restore this major work of Perugino to its place of origin. This will be the occasion to launch the celebrations of the 500th anniversary of the death of Raphael (1483-1520), who was a pupil of Perugino.
