India: Attacks on churches are not condemned
The Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi came under fire by Christian leaders and the political opposition for having “forgotten” to speak out against the recent attacks on churches in New Delhi, the capital. In the most recent incident on January 14th, the fourth in two months, a Marian grotto inside a church was vandalized.
Catholic press agency Ucanews said on January 17, 2015, that some Christian representatives had emphasized that there were common elements in the attacks, and that they suspected members of radical Hindu movements related to the party of none other than Narendra Modi himself, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Fr. Savarimuthu Shankar, spokesman for the archdiocese of Delhi, pointed out in this same press release that attacks on churches had become more frequent since the coming to power of a nationalist Hindu.
