A Salesian priest stationed at the Kristu Jyoti College in Bangalore just addressed a letter to the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India to submit a very topical request in this year of the centenary of the apparitions of Fatima: the consecration of India to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

In his letter, Fr. Jose Kuttianimattathil, SDB, wrote:

This year we are celebrating the one-hundredth anniversary of the apparitions of Our Lady in Fatima. We know that on July 13, 1917, the Most Blessed Virgin Mary told the three seers that in order to avoid wars, famines and persecutions, She requested the consecration of Russia to her Immaculate Heart and the communion of reparation on the first Saturday of the month. In this way, there will be peace; otherwise, Russia’s errors will be spread throughout the entire world, causing wars and persecutions”.

The religious continued: “Today, we see that in India, Christians are confronted with opposition and suffering in different ways. It seems that the future will be a difficult time for all the minorities in India. In this context, we can pray to Our Lady and consecrate India to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, requesting in particular that she preserve our freedom of religion and protect people from persecutions”.

“My humble suggestion,” added the Salesian, “is for the Indian Bishops’ Conference to take the initiative to consecrate the nation to the Immaculate Heart of Mary on an appropriate date, perhaps December 8, 2017, the solemnity of the Immaculate Conception. Throughout the upcoming months, the Indian Christian faithful can prepare for this consecration with their prayers and sacrifices, especially by assisting at the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and receiving the communion of reparation on the first Saturday of each month”.

“Today, we can only turn to the maternal protection of our Blessed Mother in Heaven,” concluded Fr. Kuttianimattathil. According to the press agency Fides, the Salesian priest’s request could be taken into consideration by the bishops in the near future.

Ever since the electoral tidal wave of the last few months, that saw the triumph of the anti-Christian Hindu Nationalist Party – the BJP –, profanations of churches and religious persecutions in the country have grown more intense.
