"Instruction on the Eucharist" completely revised

The provisional version of the Instruction on the Eucharist (see DICI n° 81) is to be radically reworked, the press agency of the U.S. episcopal conference, Catholic News Service, has stated. All the references to female altar servers and their exclusion from the sanctuary have already been removed, CNS affirmed, according to official sources at the Vatican, dated September 29. The points concerning the limits on the numbers of lay ministers will also be revised in depth.

The original draft denounced, in particular, 37 abuses against the Eucharist and intended to restrict the presence of altar girls. It laid into “applause and dancing inside sacred buildings”, and – in paragraph 197 – proposed that priests, deacons and the faithful should appeal to their bishop or to the Holy See in order to denounce abusive practices encountered in their parish.

According to the same source, the Vatican “hoped to be able” to publish a definitive edition of the Instruction on the Eucharist for the month of December. This version would be less detailed than the draft, which has circulated among members of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith and the Congregation for Divine Worship and Discipline of the Sacraments.
