Italy: 300 Million Euro Made Available to Rebuild 600 Churches
Giuseppe Conte, the head of the Italian government, is committed to rebuilding 600 of the 3,000 churches damaged by the deadly earthquakes that struck the Italian peninsula in 2016. An announcement that has come a few days after the victory of Matteo Salvini, Deputy Prime Minister of his government.
On June 3, 2019, Giuseppe Conte met with bishops from the regions affected by the earthquake in 2016 at the headquarters of the Italian Bishops’ Conference (CEI).
On this occasion, the chief executive of Italy pledged to sign within ten days the order approving the restoration of 600 out of the 3,000 churches struck by the earthquake of August 24, 2016.
That day, a little before 3:00 in the morning, an earthquake with a 6.2 magnitude shook the provinces of Rieti (Lazio) and Ascoli Piceno (Marche) causing the death of 298 people and causing significant material damage—3,000 churches were destroyed or damaged.
Giuseppe Conte’s media initiative comes in the midst of a tense political situation. The head of the government has come through weakened from the latest European elections faced with his Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini, who does not hesitate to assume his Catholic identity.
The hope is that the reconstruction of the religious buildings will be accompanied by a re-edification of the doctrine and the restoration of the Catholic faith in souls, after the earthquake of the Council which left behind only a field of ruins.
