More than 17,000 pilgrims were present at San Giovanni Rotondo (Apuglia), on July 1 in sweltering heat, for the consecration of the new sanctuary dedicated to Padre Pio. The Vatican was represented by its spokesman Joaquin Navarro-Valls and in the front rows of the crowd were many personalities, attesting to the popularity of Padre Pio in the peninsula. However, the influx was not as great as expected by the organizers, who were counting on around 40,000 faithful.

The new church San Pio da Petralcina is endowed with an ultramodern bell tower, dominated by an immense cross. The building includes 22 stone arches, has an interior surface of 5,700 square meters and can accommodate 7,000 faithful.
