Habemus PapamThe Italian movie director, Nanni Moretti’s latest film, Habemus Papam, recounting the agonizing crisis of a newly elected French Pope, was projected in Italy during the most recent Cannes Film Festival.  A frequenter of Croisette, Nanni Moretti assumes the role of a psychoanalyst called in to advise the newly elected pope (played by the French actor Michel Piccoli) who ended up renouncing his post.  In competition for the Palme d’Or (the Golden Palm), this film won not one prize.

The Ecumenical Prayer of the 64th Cannes Festival has been attributed to another Italian movie director, Paolo Sorrentino’s film This Must Be The Place (a title borrowed from a Talking Heads song).  It is the story, with a gothic flare, of a fallen rockstar searching once more for reconciliation and hope through his Jewish roots.  According to the jury of the Ecumenical Prayer, created in Cannes in 1974, the film “opens with an elegant trail of serious and profound reflection.”  (Sources : apic/media/Parisien-DICI #235 of 28/05/11)
