Italy: Islam is “a threat” for an “easy prey”

The American Cardinal Raymond Leo Burke, Cardinal Patron of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta and a member of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, responded on October 4, 2016 to an interview in the Italian daily newspaper Il Giornale. Without mincing words, the high-ranking prelate declared that “Muslims have as their ultimate objective gaining power worldwide. Islam, by way of sharia—its law—must govern the world and it allows acts of violence against Christians and nonbelievers.”

Cardinal Burke did not hesitate to denounce the attitude in Europe as being ostrich-like: “We refuse to recognize this reality and hesitate to defend the Christian faith. . . . There are many persons who do not understand what Islam is. And they invent this slogan that we all believe in the same God, that we are all united by love of neighbor, etc. But that is false.”

Describing the current situation of “silent apostasy,” he added: “Christians have neglected one fundamental truth: there is only one Savior of the world: Jesus Christ.” While speaking about his book, Hope for the World: to unite all things in Christ, Cardinal Burke asserts, “Islam is a threat in the sense that, for the true Muslim, Allah must govern the world. Christ said in the Gospel: ‘Render to Caesar what is Caesar’s and to God what is God’s.’ On the contrary, the Islamic religion, which is based on the law of the Qur’an (Koran), pursues the goal of governing in all countries where Muslims are found. When they are in the minority, they cannot insist on the application of the law of the Qur’an, but once they are in the majority, their duty as Muslims is to apply sharia. Today there are genuine enclaves of Muslims in Europe where sharia in fact rules. . . . The problem lies in the fact that the Muslims aspire to expand. The whole history of the Islamic presence in Europe is an attempt to conquer it. This past September 8 we celebrated the victory of the Knights of Malta after a three months’ siege by the Muslims in 1565. Malta would have been the launching site for the attack against Europe.” The Cardinal insists, recalling that “Islam is accomplished in conquest. And what is the most important conquest in relation to Christians? Rome.”

He concluded by explaining that the cause of these evils is “the corruption of the West. There are no longer enough large families. We docilely accept practices contrary to the natural law, such as abortion or so-called same-sex marriage. This is proof that we are no longer strong in the faith and hence are becoming easy prey for the Muslim conquest.”
