A return to order and war on the ideologies that have in his eyes ruined his country: that is what Jair Bolsonaro, the new president of the Republic of Brazil, announced in his investiture speech on January 1, 2019.

“We cannot allow disastrous ideologies to divide Brazilians, ideologies that destroy our values and traditions, that destroy our families, the foundations of our society,” declared the new president in the speech he gave at his inauguration in Brazil.

Jair Bolsonaro’s speech was short – about 10 minutes – and concentrated on the major challenges facing the country, for example, “the politicization of our children, the distortion of human rights, and the destruction of the family.”

Brandishing the Brazilian flag after the end of his speech, he declared that “this banner will never be red” unless “our blood must be shed.”

The new head of the Brazilian government is sure of himself and has already invited his electors to a ceremony to celebrate the first hundred days of his presidency.

It remains to be seen whether Jair Bolsonaro will obtain the green light from Congress to pursue all his reforms; while the new president’s party does have a good number of seats, he will also need the support of other political groups to obtain a majority.
