John Paul II not to go to the Synagogue of Rome, at the end of May

The pope will send as his personal representative his curate for the city of Rome, Cardinal Camillo Ruini, president of the Italian Bishops Conference, who will be accompanied by Cardinal Walter Kasper, president of the Pontifical Council for the Unity of Christians and president of the Commission for religious relations with Judaism.

The Vatican gave no explanation for this change of program. The following hypotheses are plausible: the state of health of the pope who was nonetheless taken for a drive in the Roman countryside, on the day after the Easter ceremonies; the will of the Holy Father to maintain the unique aspect of his historical visit to the Synagogue of Rome, in April 1986; the conflict with the State of Israel regarding the residence permits, denied to the religious in the Holy Land (see DICI n° 94). – The Corriere della Serra in its April 21 edition states that "the period of terrorist and warlike tension" was doubtless taken into consideration. The daily adds that since September 11, 2001, in the papal circle "he was advised to avoid, as much as possible, giving an impression which would lend itself to a paranoid interpretation, in terms of civilizational clash".
