On July 1st of last year, an attack on a Catholic church and a Protestant place of worship in Garissa, in the northeast of Kenya, left at least 17 people dead. According to the local authorities, Islamic rebels from Al Chabaab (originating from Somalia, a bordering country), tied to Al Qaida, threw grenades inside the buildings before opening fire with their rifles. Last April, another perpetrated attempt on a church in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, left one dead and dozens of wounded. These acts have been linked with the decision of the Kenyan government in October 2011 to send soldiers into Somalia to counter the Islamic rebellion. (Sources: apic/imedia/kna—DICI #259 of 10/08/12)
